Thai is the national language of Thailand, spoken by 60 million people worldwide. Primarily it is a monosyllabic, tonal language. Thai uses forty-four consonants and fifteen basic vowel-characters. These are placed left to right horizontally, with no intervening space to form syllables, words, and sentences. The words are not modified or conjugated for tenses, plurals, genders, or subject-verb agreement. Certain words are used only by Thai royals, creating a Royal Thai. Articles such as a, an, or the are also not used. All these require special attention while translating from & into Thai.
Thai language is believed to have originated from borders of Vietnam and China. Languages spoken in Burma, Vietnam, Yunnan, and Laos have influenced it. Central Thai or Bangkok Thai is considered as a standard. The written Thai was introduced in 1283, which is nearly unchanged. The writing is based on Pali, Sanskrit, and Indian concepts.
