Tamil is the first official language of Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India and one of the official languages of India and Sri Lanka. About 70 million people worldwide speak it. Sri Lanken Tamil is relatively conservative. The earliest text date from 200 BC. Early works were preserved on manuscripts made by palm-leaf. Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic and English have influenced it.
