Sanskrit is one of the main ancient languages and a most studied eastern language in the west. Sanskrit is an academic language now and spoken by a few people, generally to perform prayers & rituals. It is claimed to be a divine language. It has rich classical works in science, literature and ancient history. Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Marathi and Punjabi have extensively borrowed from Sanskrit and based on it.

Scientifically, Sanskrit is a perfect, sound based language. Its consonants form five blocks - dentals, labials, cerebrals, velar and palatal. It has 41 consonants and 13 vowels. It has a number of combinations of consonants, about 84 of them exists and each of them need to be defined in the font for a complete representation. Another characteristic of Sanskrit is the use of post-consonantal forms of the vowels. Unlike the Roman script, a vowel used after a consonant changes form and gets attached to the consonant.
