Portuguese evolved from spoken Latin in 218 BC. It was highly influenced by German and Arabic during first millennium and later on by Spanish, French and English. Between the 14th and 16th centuries the Portuguese language spread in Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Portuguese entered its modern phase in the 16th century with the grammar defined Portuguese morphology and syntax. In 1986, Portuguese became an official language in the European Union (EU). The Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP in Portuguese) was formed in 1996.

About 210 million people speak Portuguese throughout the world today. Portuguese is the official language of seven countries: Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, and São Tomé and Príncipe islands. In the vast noncontiguous Portuguese-world, there are differences and variations in its pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. The Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese are two main different variants.
