Norwegian dates to the 3rd century AD. It uses Latin alphabet. A written language evolved in the 11th century. Danish, Low German, and Swedish influenced it. It has two variants Bokmål ("book language") and the Landsmål (Nynorsk). The two languages have equal validity in law, and taught in the schools. The Bokmål, is the leading language and is strongest in eastern Norway. The Nynorsk is strong in western Norway.
