Bahasa Melayu
Malay, the official language of Malaysia and national language of Singapore is spoken by nearly 75 Million people. Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, introduced Malay literature to the western world to reflect its rich heritage. The later decades of the 19th century saw a vital output of Malay texts either being transcribed, printed, or translated. In the early 20th century, the trend for texts to be printed in the original Jawi script became less and less attractive and in the late 1950s, it was phased out in favor of the "romanised" or "Rumi" alphabets.
Malay script and literature proved that Malay by the late 13th century had had a remarkable past which evolved under the influence of Sanskrit, Arabic and Polynesian cultures. Now English has dominant influence on contemporary Malay. Malay language spoken in Singapore is similar to that spoken in most parts of West Malaysia, but differs slightly from Bahasa Indonesia. With Independence and the subsequent separation of Singapore from Malaysia, Malay continues to flourish in Singapore.
