Dutch (Flemish) is one of the official languages of Belgium and Netherlands. The language spoken in Belgium is called Flemish. About 23 million people worldwide speak it. France, Germany, Canada, USA, Australia and Israel are some of the other countries where it is spoken.

Old Dutch dates from 11th century. The monument of this period is a translation of the Psalter. It uses Latin script. In 1945 the governments of Belgium and the Netherlands took steps to reform Dutch orthography and to effect uniformity of usage in the two countries.
