Assamese is the official language of the state of Assam of India. It is an Indo-Aryan language and spoken by 25 million speakers worldwide. Bangla Desh, Nepal, Bhutan, US and UK are some of the other countries where Assamese speakers live. Its nearest language is Bengali. Assamese under her independent kings and her social life entirely self-contained, became an independent speech. The first Assamese printed book was a translation of the Bible in 18th century.
The Assamese script has 41 consonants and 11 vowels, similar to Hindi (Devnagri). The language has a number of combinations of consonants. Surprisingly about 80 of them exists and each of them need to be defined in the font for a complete representation. Another characteristic of Sanskrit based language is the use of post-consonantal forms of the vowels. Unlike the Roman script, a vowel used after a consonant changes form and gets attached to the consonant.
